ThumbGrab

YouTube thumbnail downloader

Every size YouTube keeps, straight from the source.

Paste a link. ThumbGrab pulls all five stored versions of the thumbnail, shows you which ones actually exist for that video, and hands you the file. No account, no watermark, no upload.

Works with watch, youtu.be, /shorts/, /live/ and /embed/ links, or a bare 11-character video ID.

Available files

Three steps, no detours

The whole thing runs in your browser. Images are requested directly from YouTube's image servers, so there is no queue and no middleman holding your file.

STEP 01

Paste the link

Any YouTube URL format, copied from the address bar, the share sheet or the mobile app.

STEP 02

Pick the size

Greyed-out rows are versions YouTube never generated for that video. What you see is what exists.

STEP 03

Download it

The file saves as videoID-quality.jpg, untouched and uncompressed by us.

What YouTube actually stores

YouTube keeps a fixed ladder of derivatives for every video. Two of them are 4:3 crops with letterboxing baked in — worth knowing before you drop one into a 16:9 layout. The full size reference goes deeper.

FilePixelsRatioBest used for
maxresdefault.jpg1280 × 72016:9Print, moodboards, anything that gets resized. Only exists if the upload was 720p or higher.
sddefault.jpg640 × 4804:3The reliable fallback. Letterboxed — crop 60 pixels off the top and bottom.
hqdefault.jpg480 × 3604:3Exists for every public video. Letterboxed the same way.
mqdefault.jpg320 × 18016:9Clean small crop for grids, list views and contact sheets.
default.jpg120 × 904:3Favicon scale. Rarely what you want.

Making one that earns the click

If you are here to study competitors, these are the constraints they are working inside.

Upload spec

1280 × 720, under 2 MB

16:9, saved as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. Anything smaller gets upscaled by YouTube and looks soft on TV and desktop.

Dead zones

Keep the corners empty

The duration badge covers the bottom-right. The red progress bar cuts across the bottom edge on anything already watched.

Real display size

Design for 320 pixels wide

Most impressions happen on a phone at a quarter of the size you are designing at. How to test for it.

Text load

Three to five words, maximum

The title is already next to the thumbnail. Words that repeat it are wasted space — add what the title cannot say.

Questions

Why is the 1280 × 720 version missing on some videos?

YouTube only generates maxresdefault.jpg when the source video was uploaded at 720p or higher. Older uploads, low-resolution uploads and some live streams never get one. Full explanation.

Does it work with Shorts and live streams?

Yes. Shorts, live URLs, embed URLs, youtu.be links and a bare video ID all resolve. Shorts are stored in the same 16:9 frame as everything else, so you get the frame YouTube keeps, not the vertical cover shown in the Shorts feed.

Can I use someone else's thumbnail on my own video?

No. The image belongs to whoever uploaded the video and is protected by copyright. Research, teardowns and moodboards are ordinary practice. Republishing it as your own is not. Where the line sits.

Do you store the links I paste?

No. There is no server step. Your browser requests the image from YouTube directly, and nothing about what you searched for reaches us.

The download opened in a new tab instead of saving. Why?

Some browsers block the direct save when the image comes from another domain. When that happens the file opens in a new tab instead — right-click and choose Save image, and you get the identical file.
